The cycle maintenance and repairs centre is already brimming with bikes queuing up for repairs at the expert hands of Malcolm Smith, who only opened the business in February.
Following a lifelong love of all things cycling, Malcolm, 59, from Lincolnshire, chose Bolsover as the place to pursue his passion. He closed his convenience stores last year, before making his own grand depart to the area with his family to open the specialist shop in February.
Castle Cycles also offers a route-planning service as well as bike maintenance and repairs.
“I’ll always try out a route myself before providing it to the customer,” said Malcolm. “Off-road tracks change quickly because of weather conditions and other things and people often don’t have the time to plan routes themselves.
Malcolm is a qualified Bikeability coach, teaching cycling skills to school children as well as adults.
Business is booming and Malcolm already has plans to expand as soon as the right space becomes available.
“My favourite bike is my Boardman, which is kitted out for time trial racing – the best kind of biking, as you’re not competing with anyone else, you’re trying to improve your own time.”
“I love Bikeability training – you get help kids who go from being nervous to being confident riding on main roads in traffic. You watch them become aware of road safety and look out for dangers. It’s a great life skill, and actually transfers to when they learn to drive a car later on later on.”
A level 2 and 3 coach with the Association of British Cycling, Malcolm has led biking groups internationally as well as in the UK. The shop offers discounts to biking club members, including Bolsover District Cycling Club and Bolsover Wheelers.
